International Compassion in Action
On April 25, 2015, a massive 7.8 earthquake rocked Nepal, collapsing multistory structures in Kathmandu and causing avalanches and landslides in the Himalayas. Moments after the earthquake struck, a vast sheet of ice fell thousands of feet, creating an avalanche that wiped out the village of Langtang, where 400 people lived and where, at that moment, nearly 100 foreign trekkers were believed to be staying. Katog Choling regional sanghas responded with a national Compassion in Action project to raise funds to help the surviving residents of Langtang Valley rebuild their community. Such Compassion in Action activities have continued in all the years since, regionally and internationally.
